Thomas, this is outstanding! I’ve been waiting for a project like this for a long time. Couple of questions :): Are the pop-ups limited to .jpg or .png? Or could they be .obj files brought in through the Cinema 4D pipeline included in AE? I’m hoping I can pop-up the “3D” images, and then animate them in all “views”. Is that possible, or do I need to use flat .png-like images for the popups and then cut to a closer shot where the obj files have replaced the png files, and doing the animation there, giving the illusion that the scene is still sitting on top of the book. Also, can the project be controlled so that a page opens and then stays there for the desired amount of time before opening the next page without having to resort to the static look of a freeze frame? Thanks! I can’t wait to use this project!

Hello!

I apologize I haven’t responded earlier, I was away for the weekend and just got back!

The way the project is set up, it is by far the most user friendly to use jpegs or preferably pngs. I think for what you are looking for it will be best to use flat images and cut closer to the .obj files.

In either case, when you purchase it if you cannot get it set up exactly how you want, I’m happy to give you a full refund. Just message me on my author profile page on the right and side!

Regarding the pages staying open, the way it’s set up you can animate the pop-ups for 10 seconds, then you would have to switch to a freeze frame. If you are an advanced AE user, you could extend out the comps to go beyond 10 seconds, but it would involve extending comp lengths and sliding keyframes over – so definitely not impossible, but not simple for a new user.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions or need anything, feel free to message me anytime.

Thomas, no worries, and thanks for the speedy reply! Hope you had a great weekend. Thanks for the info. I do have AE experience so extending the comp lengths should work just fine, just wanted to make sure the project had the flexibility to do that. I’ll probably have a couple of questions when I get into the project, but in the meantime thanks so much for your help, and continued success!! Ken

I purchased this yesterday and I haven’t had much time to play with it yet, but I was wondering if its easy to extend the page turns past 10 seconds. I’ve got a narration being read over my images and some pages may need more than 10 seconds (and some maybe less). Also, I’ve got more than 10 pages worth of images and I watched the tutorial on extending and lessening pages, but was a little unclear on how you increase the number of pages.

Hello,

Awesome, happy to help.

If you are wanting to have an animation happen for more than 10 seconds, that is pretty difficult, because all the keyframes for the frame turn happen at frame 900, which is exactly 10 seconds.

If you have your pop-ups animate when the page opens, then come to a complete stop within 10 seconds, it is very easy to extend the pages, as you can simply freeze frame the comp and extend it for as long as you would like.

What I would do is in the “Main” comp, lets say you want to extend Page 2 to twenty seconds. I would duplicate Page 2 (cmd+d) and where the animations stop happening, I would go to the duplicated Page 2, right click it in the timeline, Select “Time”, then “Freeze Frame”. Then just extend that out for as long as you want it, and slide all the rest of the pages over that layer.

As far as creating additional pages, the basic idea is to cut from a close up view to a standard camera view on a different page that looks identical to the page you started on. For example, if you are on page 9, and you want to extend the book 3 pages, cut to the zoom camera, then when you cut back to the main camera instead of cutting back to page 9, cut to page 7 instead, and make page 7 look identical to page 9.

I know this tactic is a bit advanced if you aren’t very familiar with After Effects, so I would be happy to take a look at your project file and help out, or send you an example of how the layers should look in your project file. Just message me on my author profile page on the right hand side, and I can directly email back and forth with you.

hi, i just bught it, can u send me the design that you made in the sample video please. the sample that you made is exactly what i need and i thoght it will come like that.

please help me and send me that template.

Hello,

The download comes with 2 project files, the main one with just the placeholders for you to add your pop-ups, which is found under /Pop Up Book Starter Kit/After Effects/ , and the demo version of the project which I believe is what you are looking for, which is in the folder /Pop Up Book Starter Kit/After Effects/Demo/.

If this isn’t what you are looking for, please let me know!

hello Thomas!

Awesome work! I wanted to buy this project but I got a question: Is it possible to edit the front cover(putting a logo and a company name/slogan on it)?

Hello,

Thank you! Yes, you can edit the entire front and back cover with whatever text, logos or designs you would like.

If you have any other questions, feel free to message me here or on my author profile page!

Thanks!

Thanks a lot! I am planning to do a wine history story based on this project and I saw in the previous comments that you have a collection of illustrations for different themes – is it possible that I can get access to these packs? I’m currently looking for castles, wine, prince&princess, and dating illustrations. If there’s anything that can help, I’ll be willing to purchase from you:)

Hello,

All the illustrations you see in the demo are included in the download, but that is all I currently have. They all come in PSD format as shape layers so you can easily edit the colors or designs to your liking.

I would definitely check out graphicriver, they have a lot of very inexpensive, professional looking graphics for different illustrations like what you are looking for.

Hope this helps, good luck with your pop-up book!

Thomas just sent you an email through envato with a link to my work :) I hope you like what I built on top of your magnificent template! Just one touch left and that is the cover. I see in your new video you can do this… Is it in the new download or yet to be released? And how can I carry over my work to the new version quickly? Much appreciated and cheers!

EDIT: The download is indeed NEW VERSION! and got some pretty cool new stuff from what I see… Would love to know what is in it exactly :)

Hello!

I just updated the item description to highlight all the updates, If you go to the Pop-Up Book Starter Kit page, on the bottom it features all the added features and updates! I got your email, but there wasn’t a link to view your book.

Whenever you have a chance, shoot that over, I’d love to see it!

-Thomas

Just sent mail to your gmail. I think maybe envato is removing links from mails?

Thomas, Great work. Got an email about an update. Can you outline what you updated. As the download file has the same name “videohive-6808435-popup-book-starter-kit.zip” so not sure that this the the updated version. Thanks Jim

Hi Jim,

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, this is the first chance I’ve had back at my computer over the weekend!

I added an update history to the project, if you go to the product description page on the bottom you can check out all the new features and updates. I’m not sure what the download name from Videohive will be for you, I think that changes with every download, but within the downloaded folder it will have “v3” in the AE project file titles – if it doesn’t, please let me know right away!

Thanks Jim, hope you enjoy the updates!

Hey I am in Love with this project and working right now on building assets for it! I will be buying it shortly but I have a quick question. Is it possible to customize the texture of each page seperately? I want to use the left side for text and right side for the pop ups for example. It would be so cool if the text was on the book and just appeared naturally like that when the page turned! I hope you can provide an answer soon and once again congrats for your wonderful work… I am working on a project for mother’s day and would love to see your comments on it after I’m done :) Cheers!

Thomas I’m doing some awesome things with your template and it’s really open to creativity. Superb template awesome tutorial! QUICK question! I am thinking of using 30 frame per second videos as BG on the pages.. I’ve found that a near full HD video fits nicely on both sides etc. with no cut in the middle. THE QUESTION is: I know I have to split the video at the end of the page and continue it at a later frame.. I tried 900 as you’ve said in the tutorial but the video skips like for 1,2 seconds… Can you help me out? What is the frame to move the video “part 2” split? Or should I do something else?

BY THE WAY can’t wait to show you what I’ve done I think you’ll love it :) Cheers

Awesome, I’m glad you are enjoying it!

You are on the right track, what you would need to do is split the video like you mentioned and continue it on exactly frame 900 – that’s where the page turn starts.

My first thought would be you duplicated the frame, and trimmed the first one to end on frame X and the second part to start on frame X – and this could easily cause a glitch if you aren’t careful because they would both technically be on the same frame, so the second part of the layer needs to be slid over by one frame.

For example, if you wanted to cut it at frame 125 and thats where the page turn starts, you would duplicate the video background you are using, on the first layer using option+right bracket to trim the end to frame 125, and on the second layer trim the beginning of the frame to 125 – this is where you could get tripped up, because now they BOTH are on frame 125. So what you would want to do is trim the second layer over 1 frame so it starts on frame 126, Then slide that whole layer to frame 900 to continue where the turn starts.

It’s worth mentioning it may be easier depending on your situation to enable the custom background and place the background in the “Main” comp on the bottom, just make sure in the “Book Control” comp you have “Enable Custom Background” checked.

Let me know if this works for you, if not feel free to send me your AE file and I can take and look if that still isn’t solving the issue!

Thomas I figured out the video BG problem. Basically I have to shift the video timings a bit in left, right designs, open and turn sections etc. Now it is perfect as in the work I linked to you in private mail! Would love to hear what you think about it :)

I bought this and I thought the book is a 3d layer or (3d object) so I can move the camera around … but it seems like its a 3d render. Can I have the 3d file with the same animation so I can modify my camera ? C4D would be great :) or other obj sequance file would be great :)

Hello! It’s actually a hybrid of both, the book itself is pre-rendered, but the pop-ups are fully native in After Effects. There is also the “Zoom” comps that are fully generated in AE, but the camera is limited to having to be positioned closer to the pop-ups as to not reveal anything below the current page being showcased. I’m sure you figured this out, but I just wanted to write this in case anyone else was looking through the comments and curious themselves!

Regarding the 3d file, that is not included in the download, only the AE project file.

If you are unhappy with the project in any way, I fully stand behind all my projects and would be happy to get you a full refund. Just message me on my author profile page and we can get that taken care of right away.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to message me anytime!

Hi Thomas! The video tutorials are not available on your website. They just show up as ‘video not available’. Is there some other way to access the tutorials? Keen to use this template asap and these tuts would be mighty helpful. Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for pointing this out, I actually updated some of the tutorials and removed them from the site so they are currently only in the download.

The tutorials can be found in your downloaded project file within the folder /Assets/Tutorials/. If they are not showing up in that folder my first thought would be the .zip file you received from Videohive may not be finished uncompressing.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions please feel free to reach out anytime!

hi there, i just bought this popup book and the demo video looked really good. what i was hoping for is to find out the demo video in the zip file so i can just edit the parts i want like text delete some pages i didnt want to a very simple stuff, but what i end up having is the entare popup i have to make it on my own!:( which is very bad as i never worked with After Effects and this is an impossible task for me to do a video that good that u did in the demo, which is what i want at the end of the day. Is it kk for you to also include the demo video in the zip ot just share it with me (me) bulgaria_mitko@yahoo.com. thank you!

Hello,

The demo video is included with the project. There are two versions included for each version of After Effects, one with just the standard placeholders, and the demo. For example, if you are using After Effects CC, the correct file for the demo is /After Effects/pop-up-book-starter-kit-demo-CC.aep.

I hope this helps, if you need anything else please feel free to message me!

-Thomas

yes, you were write the demo is included in the project! thank you very much and u did really an amazing job!!! :)

Thank you! If you run into any troubles, just shoot me a message on my author profile page.

Hi, One question before I go for the purchase, It is possible to animate the camera to something like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_fEP7HS7yE (camera movement)

Hello,

Some of the camera moves you linked to are possible, others are not.

For example, the camera fly around when the book is not opened at :05 is not possible, but there are however 3 different intros for the camera to choose from.

The camera pushed into the scene at :21 is possible, but you will have to cut (or crossfade) the comps from the “Main” comp in the project to the “Zoom” comp, then you can control exactly where the camera is as long as it is close up to the pop-ups and not pushed back far enough to see below the page.

I hope this helps! I know it can get a little confusing with the limitations of a hybrid project like this, but believe me when I say every decision I made while creating this project was to have maximum flexibility within the limitations of After Effects.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me anytime!

Hi Thomas,

Great project! I’m really having fun with it! I did run into one problem though & would appreciate your help. My flip book will consist of 4 or 5 pages only, so say I animate the popups till page 5 for example. How do flip to the last page (page 11 – the one that closes) without having a jump between page 5 & that page?

I have to submit my project tomorrow so it’d be great if you can answer as soon as possible.

Thanks a lot!

Hello,

The two best options would be to either:

1. Cut the camera from the main comps to the zoom comps a few times during the project, then on the last page you want for the book book, says it’s 5 pages, place all the same comps in page 5 into page 10. Then, when you cut back (or crossfade, however you have the transitions) from the zoomed comp cut back to the new page 10 with what had originally been page 5. I’ve done it a lot with custom books and almost no one notices the transition.

or,

2. Use the quick-flip option, and have the page flip open to page 5, then if you do have exactly 5 pages it would work out perfectly to just use the remaining pages as if you were starting from page 1.

I hope this helps! I there’s anything else I can help out with, please feel free to message me again.

Thanks Thomas, your suggestions worked! :) One more question please, what’s the approximate rendering time for the project you did? My render (5 pages) seems to be taking a very long time. Is that normal or might it be a result of something I might have done. Thanks in advance

Hello,

Render times for this project are typically in the 2-4 hour range.

This will vary based on your computer specs and how many pages you have in your book, but there are a few things you can do to lower the render times.

You could disable motion blur. I can’t say for certain how much time it would save, but I would be wiling to guess around 20%. You are sacrificing quality for render times with this option, but it is an option.

You could export out an uncompressed version of the final project, such as a ProRes 422 which is what I use, and once you have the full, uncompressed file export that file into whatever final format and size you are going to use. This may seem counterintoutive to export it out twice, but AE renders much faster without having to encode or resize a file, and to export an uncompressed file with a different codec (.h264, .wmv) or resize it from Premiere is typically quite fast.

Hey Thomas – thanks for your great work on this – really save me some time. One question – is there a quick way to add something to the back cover like we did on the front cover? I need to do that, but as of now I can only figure out how to “fake it”. Any advice? Need to get this done very shortly.

Hello, unfortunately with the current version of the project there isn’t a quick way to insert an image on the back cover like on the front cover. I haven’t had too many people request that feature yet, but I can see how it would come in handy, so I’m going to make sure to add that feature into the next update (probably in January). If you need help setting up a back cover manually, feel free to message me on the right side on my author page and I can help you get that set up – it’s only about 15 frames you would have to manually keyframe with the back cover closing.

Hey just wanted to clarify what can be altered and what can’t. It looks like everything is done in After Effects but I saw the trapcode stuff was pre-rendered and wondered how that effects the project. Can we just remove those effects?

Also, while you mention that there are a few camera options, I assume that there’s nothing to stop us from creating 100% custom cameras. Correct?

Thanks for the info!!!

Hi David,

No problem, the project file is partially pre-rendered, so there are certain limitations on the camera moves. There are 3 main intros to choose from, the main camera angle you see in the demo, and a second camera angle the user can control that is zoomed up on the book.

The second camera angle is a comp with only your pop-ups and the page they are resting on, the book below it is not in this comp, so as long as the camera is close enough (or angled properly) to the book that you can’t see below the current page you are on, you can customize the camera however you like. You will have to cut back to the main camera view as the page transition though.

I replied to your email with more detail on how the project works, but if anyone else has any questions please feel free to message me.

Thanks!

Hey Thomas! This is simply a brilliant project! What an original idea and concept. You’ve done a great job here! :)

Thanks! I really appreciate it.

wow Discussion on Pop-Up Book Starter Kit i really like it it sublet for my project…

but i got one problem>>I’m not good with CS5.5, CS6, CC

so if it possible can you make tutorial

Hello Adam,

Thank you, I’m glad you like the project. If you are not familiar with After Effects, I would suggest starting by learning the basics from places like tutsplus.com, videocopilot.net or linda.com.

Pop Up Book Starter Kit does come with video tutorials for how to use the project, and they are made with beginners in mind. If you have any troubles along the way or any questions I’ll be happy to help out!

Could you please also sent the extra tutorial about changing the background to me? Thnx!!

Hello, I don’t have an actual tutorial about that, but I’d be happy to explain how!

First off, make sure you have the latest version of the project. It should say “v2” in the title of the AE project.

To simply change the background color gradient:

1. In the “Main” comp, select the Book Control layer, and within the effects controls scroll down to “Background”.

2. Simply edit the start and end colors to the desired gradient or solid color you would like!

To change to a custom background:

1. In the “Main” comp, select the Book Control layer, and within the effects controls scroll down to “Custom Background”. Enable the Checkbox.

2. In the “Main” comp, scroll down to the bottom layer, it is a comp titled, “Custom Background.” Double click to go into that background comp.

3. Insert your custom background into this comp. You can switch back to the “Main” comp and you should be able to see your custom background! There is an example desk for you to check out( I enabled collapse transform on that comp). Just make sure to make the layer 3d if there is motion with the camera.

Please note, you don’t HAVE to insert your background into this comp, I just thought it would be useful since it has all the cameras easily accessable. You can place your custom background in the “Main” comp below the pages, just make sure to copy a camera from any of the pages and paste it into the “Main” comp.

If you have any more questions please feel free to message me on my author page (http://videohive.net/user/ThomasKovar) and I can go into more detail!

Hi Thomas, thank you for your work, it’s beautiful! Is it possible to add more pages to the pop-up book? Thanks! :)

Hi Joannieo, thank you very much. Although it’s technically only 10 pages, you could add more pages. There are 2 camera angles, the main view and the “Zoom” camera view. What you could do to create more pages is for example when you get to page 7 (or wherever), you would cut to the page 7 zoom camera view. Then, paste your page 7 pop-ups to page 4 (just some page earlier than 7), then instead of cutting back to the original page 7 camera you cut to page 4 that looks identical to the old page 7, just a few pages back. You could repeat this process as many times as you like.

I also want to mention that if you or anyone else reading the comments wants any help with this or wants more details explaining how to do this please contact me via my author page ( http://videohive.net/user/ThomasKovar ) on the right side where it says “Email ThomasKovar” and I will go over this in more detail with you!

Hi, First of all, this is a great work! But, I didn’t see requirement very carefully before I purchased. I only have After Effects CS5, so I can not use it when I try to open the file.

Please kindly help me to fix this problem!

Thanks ahead!

Thank you Mark! I’m really sorry the project file isn’t available for CS5, I used an expression in the project that I didn’t realize when I started it was only available in CS5.5 and up.

I believe the process for a refund is to create a new ticket and submit a request to this link: http://support.envato.com/index.php?/Tickets/Submit

From my experience, if it is a user error and not an issue with the actual project file, they will not issue a refund. I can understand their policy, but I disagree with it. If Envato will not issue you a refund I will personally reimburse you for the purchase. Just contact me at kovar.thomas@gmail.com and we’ll get it sorted out!

Great work with this! Just wondering, after reading the comments, I thought it was possible to animate the camera a bit? Nothing seems to happen when I try and move it around

Thank you! In the original version of the Pop-Up Book Starter Kit it didn’t include the option of animating the camera, just options to choose from 3 intro camera moves. I released an update to the book that has additional comps for each page called “Zoom”, so for example, under “Page 2 Main” there is an additional comp called “Page 2 Zoom”. Within the Zoom comps you can animate the camera however you wish.

If you need more help please feel free to message me anytime! The fastest way to get a hold of me is at this email: kovar.thomas@gmail.com. Thanks!
