@halibutblue, YES – and it’s easy. What you see as a background sphere is a background comp with a flat 2D grid image inside a “background pre” comp that has CCSphere applied.
All you have to do is drop a bunch of images in the background comp, scale them way down, and spread them out. The images will be mirrored though, so in the “background pre” comp, you’ll want to horizontally flip the “background” comp (right click>transform>flip horizontal).

Will it work with CS5 ?
I opened in CS4 and the cc effects layers are not there.
In the tutorial you illustrate how to delete Trapcode or CC layers if not in use. Only trapcode shows for me and I don’t have Trapcode.
How can I use CC … do I need to add it…how do I do that.
I opened your preview file and the word “Or” seems attached to these six words ” trains of thought simple hypnotic beautiful” ... is this because CC doesn’t seem to be present?
This word “Or” disappears in Edit Mode.
Please help ASAP …
I rendered in Edit mode…obviously boring compared to your demo and of course the words “Edit Mode” are present in the rendered file.
Is there any way to eliminate The words “Edit Mode” and still render in Edit Mode? Why you ask…still a very nice effect is achieved that renders very fast.

I haven’t had a chance to test Meridian with CS5 yet, but it should work. I still need to upgrade actually!
I don’t know what the problem with the CC layers might be. I’ve just opened the project up in CS4 with no problem – the layers are there and all functional. Layers 4, 5 and 6 of composition ! MAIN should be called CC Particle Frond Turbulent, CC Particle Frond Main and CC Space Particles respectively. I can’t think of any reason why those layers would not be there in the file you’re looking at. If you can see the layers, but they’re not showing the CC effects, then the most likely cause is that you don’t have the CC effects installed. You’d need to go back to your original After Effects CD and install them.
The thing with the Or… well done-you’ve spotted a glitch in the preview file! If you want to use the preview file instead of the main project file, I can send you a new version of it. Or I can tell you how to fix it – it’s pretty easy.
Getting rid of the edit mode text…. there are hidden layers in many of my compostions – just to keep things visually simple. You can show these hidden layers by clicking the Toggle Shy Layers switch in the Timeline window. It’s the button two to the left of motion blur and looks like a little guy peeping over a wall. Once you’ve done that, just go down to layer 10, EDIT MODE (it’s a text layer) and turn its visibility off.

I’m in awe after looking at this project. It’s a great value.
There’s almost an hour and a half video tutorial with this that’s Creative Cow level. You have a really good tutorial speaking voice. I also hadn’t seen particle embedding explained before (thank you).
I was thinking, replacing the grid sphere with a Trapcode Form sphere could be really fun to play around with (a little movement, audio react, etc).
