Yes you can use any type of media including movies, you can extend the scenes, but you need Trapcode Particular, as you cannot extend the pre-rendered particular layer, so if you have particular, and use the plug-in required version, you can extend all layers (also you need optical flares)

Would I be able to extend the play of one animation so I have it playing for 3 – 5 mins on the same scene?
Yes you can do that if you have Trapcode Particular, all you have to do is just add time to the composition, then drag the layers to fill it
