Porto is the second largest city of Portugal, located in the northwest and the capital of the Porto Metropolitan Area (NUTS III and the metropolitan area), the North (NUTS II) and the District of Porto. The city is considered a global city range.  The municipality with 41.42 km ²,  has a population of 237,591 inhabitants (2011)  within their administrative boundaries, is divided into seven parishes .
It is the city that gave its name to Portugal – very early (c. 200 BC), when designated for Portus Cale, coming later to become the capital of the Portucalense County, where he graduated Portugal and where, more later, he built the Portuguese Empire, since it was built, mostly by people from the northern region . It is the seat and the capital of the Porto Metropolitan Area, which comprises 17 municipalities with 1,757,413 inhabitants in 2089 square kilometers area, with a nearby population density of 1,098 inhabitants / km², which makes the city the 13th most populous urban area the European Union, and therefore the second largest Portuguese urban area, after Lisbon. Porto and Porto Metropolitan Area form the structural core of the Northern Region, which has an area of ??21,278 km² (24% of the Continent) and a population of 3,689,609 inhabitants (Census 2011),  corresponding to 37% of the continent and 35% of Portugal, the largest population center of the country (NUTS II), followed by the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The port, together with the neighboring municipalities of Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos, forms the Atlantic Front Port , which is the most urbanized core population of the Metropolitan Area, located on the coast, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean with the structural influence of the Douro River estuary , which unites Gaia Porto.
Porto is the most important city highly industrialized coastal area of ??the North, where are located many of the most important economic groups in the country, such as Altri, the Amorim Group / Ceibo Amorim, Banco BPI, BIAL, EFACEC , Frulact the Lactogal, Millennium BCP, Porto Editora, Sonae, Unicer or RAR Group. The Business Association of Portugal is headquartered in Porto. The North is the only Portuguese region which exports more than it imports
