The Historic Centre of Porto is the oldest area of ??the city of Porto in Portugal, classified as World Cultural Heritage since 1996. It corresponds to the urban fabric marked by the medieval origins of the city and includes territories in the parishes of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Victory and Miragaia.
Despite all the developments and changes that over time have taken the historic center of Porto, still observing the urban set that is based on the old medieval hull provides an image of consistency and homogeneity. Suggests immutability and permanence in time, thus providing a unique example of an urban landscape endowed with identity, strong character and aesthetic quality.
The area classified by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage includes the part of the inner city to the route of the old Ferdinand Wall, the XIV century and some adjacent areas of similar characteristics or valued by later achievements for a total of about 49 hectares.
The involve classified area was already set protection area that includes: Aliados Avenue and surrounding blocks to the Trinity Squares, of King John I, Philippa of Lancaster, Gomes Teixeira and Carlos Alberto, the Garden of Carregal and St. Anthony’s Hospital; the New Customs area and the valley of Virtues; the slopes of Fontainhas and Guindais; a track east of the old line of the medieval wall in the vicinity of Batalha; the riverside area of ??Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Port Wine cellars. This crown of significant heritage value despite some decontextualized copies, covers a total of 130 hectares.
