Golf is a sport in which players use different types of clubs to throw a ball through a series of holes in a vast expanse of land, using the lowest possible number of strokes. It is one of the few ball sports that do not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the sport is played on a golf course which usually consists in a progression of nine or eighteen holes. Each hole includes an initial field area (T) and a final area (green), in which is the hole itself. Between the two areas there are several standardized types of terrain and obstacles, and each hole has a unique configuration.
The golf competitions are usually punctuated due to the lower number of individual strokes or stroke play, or the lowest score on each individual hole during a complete round of a player or a team, or match play. The stroke play format, however, is the most common in all competitions.
