Yes. Newer software versions always opens older files version. The other way don’t.(CS3 doesn’t open CS5 )

Yes, you can use any image on the background but we must make sure it is large enough to cover the whole environment where the camera wanders. Please send me an email and I will send you back all the backgrounds available.
