HI,
Sorry if this is a really stupid question but Envato Support couldn’t help me with my enquiry and suggested that I ask on this forum.
I would like to start developing my own photography web site. But I am newbie photographer and know even less about websites! As it will just be for my charity photography work at the moment, I don’t want to be committed to a monthly payment for a site and would want to change things around as I get more experienced, so don’t want to go down the road of using a developer at the moment (although if I go professional l would probably get one done then).
What ever I use needs to be ‘idiot proof’ as I don’t know how to write code etc, but I do like some of the themes from Themeforest, so would like to an incorporate one of those with my wish list above, if that is possible of course!
Many thanks in advance for any advice or information.

WordPress is a very popular “idiot proof” website solution, I would recommend that.
You need 4 things for a wordpress website:
1) Domain name (eg: yourwebsite.com)
2) Hosting (the computer that runs your website and emails 24/7)
3) A website design (eg: a theme purchased from here on ThemeForest)
4) Your content (photos, text, contact details, etc..)
You have to pay someone for the domain name (1) and website hosting (2) and for the design (3). For point (3) the design, pick a theme from the WordPress category here on ThemeForest. These themes are very cheap and can be installed rather easily onto your website, and then you can add all your own photos and text (4).
You can read more about getting a wordpress website here: http://codex.wordpress.org/New_To_WordPress_-_Where_to_Start
To pay for (1) and (2) you can check the recommended providers list here: http://wordpress.org/hosting/
Best of luck with your project
You could look from here – http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress/creative/photography
You need a hosting with those requirements:

Many thanks for your very quick response.
I have my domain name already and an email address, so I assume that means I have number 2 as well. I know which theme I like already but don’t have any wording or photographs ready yet, but I can work on that.
I will go through the link you attached, again many thanks for the bullett points and clear explanation, just what I was after!
Best wishes.

Something tells me it’s not proof at all
Hi Kriskorn, sorry I must have been typing as you posted your response. Many thanks for the links.
I am however, a little confused as they do look like blogs rather than photographer’s web sites I have seen. I have tried to do quite a bit of research, particularly about optimising your site and they talk about ‘landing pages’ etc. But I can’t see where I would add pages after that with different galleries, contact sheet etc?
Sorry for being super dim, and in my case perhaps you might be right rvision, and they aren’t quite this ‘idiot proof’!
I will check with the company I have my domain and email through and see if they cover the specification given, thank you for that information.
Best wishes. Barders

I wasn’t reffering to you, offcourse. And I understand your confusion and it is valid one.
For me, using WP as a “CMS” is still like hammering square pegs into round holes. So, each theme author has it’s own ways to do this and therefore you have such differences when working with themes from different authors. There is no “official” way of doing things.
HI rvision, I was laughing at myself really, it’s seems like learning to walk again, so confusing, but interesting as well!
I have started by contacting my email provider and see where I can go from there.
But thank you for your comments, as I do appreciate that this is a complex issue and will take my time to understand as much as I can, before I take that leap!
Best wishes.
