up, down, left, right, enter AS3 TV remote

As the internet and TV become one and flash hits tv’s, dvd players, and cable boxs, the Need for TV Remote control ie: up, down, left, right, enter functionality for navigation becomes apparent.

Basically using arrows to jump between hot buttons – and the enter button to simulate mouse down.

I am in need of this type of functionality in AS3 so when I plug in a USB remote control to simulate a tv experience to my computer the flash file will act accordingly.. Say if you hit the right arrow the flash goes to the closest hot spot to the right.. or the down arrow takes you to closest hot spot downward. ect..

any points in the right direction would be very appreciated or even a file for sale would be great… maybe a freelance quote would be considered. Thanks so much for any time or help anyone has to offer

USB remotes just generate keyboard codes on the computer (and possibly mouse events) and they come with different capabilities; some generate more codes than others. (I developed a Flash presentation app for someone who had a USB remote that generated only the Up and Down-arrow keycodes.)

You should first select the remote control you want to target, determine what set of key-codes and mouse events it is capable of generating then simply develop your application to be controlled by that set of key-codes and events. You should then be able to control the application using either the keyboard and mouse, or the remote.

cool thanks for the advice tinman. I asked the client which remote they are using and I guess I should be able to further my approach from there. I also found that Flash Lite has this tab navigation mode built into it. you think if flash lite has it so should flash.
