Hi,

What do you think about idea to expand tagging functionality?

To let users/buyers tag items whatever they find appropriate for a theme? And to display a tag cloud with 50 most frequent tags as a way to navigate items?

I think this will make old themes more visible if buyers are looking for something specific.

I quite like how the authors choose their tags and then they get reviewed to be sure they are appropriate. This helps keep any attempts at gaming the system to a minimum, and ensures all tags are accurate.

I really can’t stand tag clouds in general, so I’m the wrong guy to ask when it comes to that :D

I just kind of like tagging how it is done now, but I’d love to hear what others have to say!

Well, in this case tags can be used to narrow searching for something specific. As I see the functionality now, only way to search is to enter keywords/tags in the search box.

Let me show you an example where this can be helpful – when you pick a category, like this:

Site Templates
  Creative
    Photography

it would be great to show a tag cloud of all templates in Photography subcategory, and refine the search. Consider tags here as a navigational aid and categories helping system. Some of the tags can be ‘promoted’ to categories if they occur too many times.

As for ‘gaming the system’ issue – it’s the same story as with ratings. It can be done with threshold – tags will be shown only if entered more than x times.

Like I said, I’m not fond of the idea but you’ve brought up some very nice ideas, looking forward to what others think :)

Some people use tag clouds… some people don’t…

I think they’re very useful for finding popular tags amongst others and I’m all for adding them to the site…

Using your example of getting to the Photography files, it takes 3 clicks to get their. Where if it was a popular tag (or one like it)... in a tag cloud it would be easily spotted and take 1 click… improving the UI, IMO
