P.S. I think we all agree that the ratings system can be improved, but that’s been discussed at length elsewhere so I don’t necessarily want to open that can of worms here (although I probably did unintentionally)
We all know you love the cans of worms, so don’t try to look innocent, dude.
4 star rating is depressive. Here is how I think item becomes a 4-star rated:
- 3 ratings are needed for stars to appear:
- 2 buyers are “normal” ones and they see that theme is awesome and they rate it 5 stars
- 1 buyer needs XYZ features, ABC customizations and/or cannot upload to wordpress.com hosting because it doesn’t allow custom themes and rate it 1 star
5 + 5 + 1 = 11 / 3 = 3.66666666
That’s how you get 4 stars and buyers rating it after are probably conformists

For me this makes no sense. If a file is bug free, works like it says in the description and has great support, then why a 4 star rating only? Especially when the lack of desired features was known about before they decided to purchase?? Flawed reasoning IMO DOK
This is what’s so frustrating. Because I think a lot of times ratings are based on “how great was this file for my particular project” as opposed to rating the file as a standalone piece of work. I’ve bought tons of files to only realize afterward they weren’t suited for my individual project, but I’ve never rated a file based on this criteria.

Don’t know how many girlfriends left you for your best friend, but 4* rating is just 4* rating.

Today we get an email saying that he went ahead and bought the theme and likes it but rated it 4 stars because of those missing features!
that’s great! haha.
I’ve modified my ticket support system to add an automatic link at the bottom of emails reminding people to rate the item. I include this when I get a happy customer (likely to leave good rating) and I delete this when I’m responding to a nasty customer (ie: one who tries to use the item outside of it’s listed features). I get many “Thanks! Just given you 5 stars!” replies
But yer, I’ve given up making 5 star items. Quite happy with 4+
I would love to see the rating breakdown similar to tripadvisor.

Ok so what’s the consensus so far. Ban users after purchase?

Terrific strategy. I’m going to start doing this.

I would ban any user after purchasing, no matter what or when.
