To combat the competition on the horizon that is Video Copilot\’s Optical Flares plugin, Red Giant Software is developing their newest extension to Knoll Light Factory, called Knoll 3D Flare. Now 3D lens flares and positioning has always been possible with Knoll, you just needed a little jerri-rigging, but with the new extension, it is going to make it super easy, as well as adding a bunch of attributes that will make using your lens flares a lot easier, and hopefully (for RGS ) keep you with Knoll over Optical Flares.

I honestly have never liked Video Copilot. They create pretty good work but it’s mostly all copied. I don’t look forward to their lens thing, Knoll is the best and will always win in my opinion :D

Copied? How is any Video Copilot stuff copied? I mean, they are working on a bigger, better Lens Flare plugin, Twitch was original, as is allllll of their stock packs… and their tutorials are all the first of their kind, so I’m not understanding what you are sayin…

If anything I would say that Video Copilot GETS COPIED . I look at a lot of tutorials and plugins, as does everybody in the industry (including Topher, as we all know), and they consistently are working on something that hasn’t been done before or is above and beyond what is being done by other people/companies. They continually push the envelope further with the work they do. That’s not a sign of someone that copies others. To call them that would be a mistake.

If you see something that isn’t quite complete do you accept it or do you try to go out and change it? Video Copilot saw something lacking in Knoll Light Factory and they decided to make up for that. There’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition.

Kramer is doing really good things with AE. If ou’re familiar with his tutorials you can recognize designs and ideas partly or fully taken from his works and used around the world. The bad thing is that lot of people copy Kramer and for that reason it becomes like “Video Copilotish style” that is recognizable from the distance. But if you can avoid copying 1:1 you can get some really good ideas and techniques out of his work. For example I took some techniques from his 3D city tutorial and used for my 3D Laptop project.

that’s ridiculous. What you mean, that the creator of Knoll “invented” the lens flare. what if someone create some very very nice blur type, is he coping Adobe ?! Or what if some1 create new plugin that is wokring with particles he’s copying Particular ?!

And about the copying stuff, tell me how many of the guys that are in the tutorial/stock industry with the design is being asking personally to create something for new blockbuster film or TV show.

Any ideas on how much the Knoll 3D is going to be? For what I read from rabinowitz’s blog, this plugin has some real advantages plus is an industry standard but I am really excited about Kramer’s Optical Flare.
