Thanks Felt Tips – the addition of the graphic was requested by the client after the footage was shot, so yes I know how difficult that is. I also knew the horses would be a long shot. I’ve got enough footage to make some decent comps, I’ve already progressed the God animation to a level I am happy with, but its all the other stuff as you say. I’ve recommended to the client several times that they change the idea – but they are adamant. I was hoping someone could think of a cool alternative look that would work well.

maybe they could hire the videogame studio that makes “God of War” videogames, like this shot is pretty cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlvC1EXtPZ0 lol :)

making complicated epic graphics takes a team of devs hundreds of hours. or one guy hundreds of hours. there’s some pretty great epic templates here, though not customized with gods and chariots and epic bays of water

I have to say I’m really surprised by these responses. I understand that I wasn’t clear enough in my description, but the work has since been done, someone else has been paid well, and the video is good. It was never meant to look like Lord of the Rings or God of War. I’m about to post another message for a Leonardo Davinci style animation that I need. Payment is $500. I also need another shot to represent horsepower in terms of a boat. Will pay $150 for that. There will be plenty more work to come.

Horses made of water to run across a harbour?... you’re going to need a 3D artist too – and a talented one, one who’s very expert in animal modelling, animation and fluids, not to mention lighting (that’d normally be 2/3 3D artists) ..

Felt, I thought such things much more easy to do with combining, overlaping and processing real horses run + water shots. Don’t you think so from your experience?

Best Regards, Andrey

Yes… as done to great effect in the famous Guinness commercial, nearly 15 years ago.

Zac didn’t have any horse shots though, as I understood it. If you did have horse shots, you would need to make sure that they were shot (and lit) from exactly the right angle to match your main shot. Regardless of that, you’d have a very tough job making them look convincingly like they’re made of water.

I expect we have a rather different conception of what constitutes “well paid” and “good”. I’m prepared to be proven wrong though. Can you post a link to the results? I can’t wait to see the water horses.

Regarding the advice in this thread: I have worked for nearly 20 years in high-end moving image / visual effects. I’ve been a director, VFX supervisor, VFX artist, editor and animator. The advice you have received here is good advice and the cost estimates based on your description are the very low end of standard pricing. I still maintain the fees you are offering above are extremely low. If you can get commercial work done to your satisfaction within those budgets, then good for you.

Here’s a guide to mograph costs if anyone’s interested.

http://motiongraphicdesigncensus.org/2011/01/motion-graphic-design-census-results/

To sum up the freelancer part (page 10): from a sample of 500, the median freelancer day-rate is $500. Day rates range from $80 to $2500. Of the entire sample, only 6 had a dayrate under $150.

I understand that I wasn’t clear enough in my description,

Is why I was asking for some examples of visual look similar with the one you want for you project but I was ignored.

I think we are beating two type of horses here (if I’m allowed this idiotic word pun). Some understood realistically looking horses made of water or whatever while the actual request had nothing to do with this idea.

Since we are not some visual fx agency competing for clients but just a forum no harm had been done, we lost nothing.

If you found someone to work on the project for the budget you had then is great. If you want to show us the result then you are welcome. if not, again no problem.

I don’t understand why this needs to be like: “Your budget request was crazy, you people are crazy, I had found someone with feet on the ground who worked for realistically budget!” Projects may be done for free or for millions of dollars. Why think everything should cost couple of hundreds of dollars? Maybe I have a wrong impression of your posts. Correct me if this is the situation.

Also, people, the correct workflow when a client ask for a quote or help with a project is to understand what the client actually wants. Do not jump to conclusions and start asking for money. If they want a hobbit, this doesn’t means they want the new film from Peter Jackson.
