I recently had a soft rejection on an item but never received an email telling me so. I only knew because I was watching the queue and looked at the hidden items in my profile when my item was no longer waiting for review.
Is this normal?
My last soft rejection comes with an email from the staff! otherwise you don’t know what you should change. You should take a support ticket.

Try going into account settings an see if “Send me an email when my items are approved or rejected?” option is checked.

I eventually got an email altering me. It was took hours though and I’m not sure why. It could be any number of network related issues but I’m content that it at least arrived.
My checkbox for emailing me when someone replies to this thread is checked and I haven’t received any emails yet even though there have been 3.

It just got added recently i think. But i guess the soft rejection emails should be sent regardless of this option being checked or not, because of the reviewers comment.
I’ve got a same problem. My item has disappeared from the queue and no mails! I’ve asked my hoster provider to check the mail server from his side, but he said that all works fine. I exactly know that my item was reviewed.
...now waiting for the support response…
I think something wrong happens with Envato mail service.

We had some problems overnight with our email processing queue and things got backed up… that would probably account for the lag time in getting your rejection email.
