Hi,
I’ve made a custom effect which i want to include in my next AE project for VH. The custom effect will work when opening the project by anyone else but a ‘missing effect’ error will pop up. Is there maybe a script that writes the code directly into the XML file? How do you handle Custom FX? Would you just explain where to paste the code?
thanks
Usually with custom effects ‘missing effect’ error will not cause any problems. Once I uploaded a project with 2 ‘missing’ custom effects. I explained to the reviewer that the effects will still work, but it seems like not always. The reviewer said that After Effects crashed once opened. I had to recreate those effects in Pixel Bender Toolkit, which can save simple files, which you can then copy to your plug-ins folder. You can find some information http://maltaannon.com/blog/pixel-bender-and-aeuicontrols/ and http://maltaannon.com/articles/after-effects/introduction-to-pixel-bender/ . The only disadvantage of using Pixel Bender is that you cannot create groups… Anyway, it worked for me.
EDIT : Actually, ‘missing’ custom effects used to work for me quite a long time ago, but then they suddenly stopped working, so I had to use Pixel Bender. I guess it was something with my After Effects, because I haven’t found similar problems on the net.

There is no missing effects on your computer because you altered the preseteffects.xml.
I have a file “Cinema Looks” which uses Custom Effects.
I had to make a custom TXT file with tutorial to show the user how to install them (copy to preseteffects.xml) and the file was accepted and all user were happy
But the Pixel Bender would be better since it’s only copy/paste and for preseteffects you need to show a couple of things…

Pixel Bender’s not very future proof. Support was dropped from CS6 IIRC .

I also did this after the crash has occurred for the reviewer. The file was temporarily held by the review team and finally soft-rejected again, because “The file needs to work straight up without ridiculous mods. Requiring edits on local files can’t be accepted. From one side your controls provides great and easy control over your project – from other – making it work requires complicated and unacceptable modifications.” That was 1 year ago, maybe something has changed?
thank you very much for your replies.
