Hope anyone in Irene’s path is safe and healthy. Figured I’d post a picture of what I woke up to..

I’d be pretty freaked out if I woke up outside, too.
Good luck to everyone that lives in those areas. Lets hope it wont be a second Katrina.

Katrina was a much more powerful storm. I think Irene was a 1 (maybe 2) by the time it made landfall, Katrina was a 3 at landfall (coming down from a 5). New Orleans is below sea level so flooding is a major issue there, that’s why it got devastated.
The winds of a hurricane don’t do most of the damage, its the tornadoes that spin off the NE side and the major damage is caused by water (flooding).
I’ve been through my share of hurricanes when I lived on the Gulf Coast, category 1, 2 and 3’s which includes Katrina. I know first hand how the media loves to overreact when these storms are coming.
When I began renting my home on the Gulf Coast I remember the renters calling me about a hurricane coming their way. They already bough all the batteries, water and gas they could among other things because the local news said they were in the “path”. This path is typically a massive swath from Texas to the Florida panhandle according to the weather channel
. I told my renters to relax, I had already checked the path of the storm online (the computer models are all available to look up) and they would probably see some mid to high winds, maybe some broken tree limbs and power flickers but not to listen to the weather channel.
This one probably did some damage but the media (FOX Noise specifically) made way to big a deal of it. It’s great to be prepared, better you are than not, but overrating can also be bad causing unnecessary stress. It’s best to use your good judgement. I knew when I needed to evacuate and when I didn’t. It’s about using common sense, which the media doesn’t have.
Is that your car Mark?
Glad you’re fine & the tree didn’t crash into the house…
It was a 1 at land fall – and I agree with all of your points, except for the “use your good judgement”; It really depends on the person – some people would figure “Oh, it won’t happen to me” even though there’s a category 5 headed their way.
P.S: Loving the new avatar.
