Here’s a very interesting report re html5’s limitations; done by longtailvideo.com (they produce the jwplayer used here and many other places, to playback flv videos):

http://www.longtailvideo.com/html5/

overall it looks like flash video playback is still fine, which is good news, and that there’s a lot of limitations to html5. I’m a big flash fan myself, so overall this report is good news for us flashers. At least that’s what I got out of it, is “don’t rush to embrace html5, it has a lot more limitations than flash”. Any other feedback/comments? thx..

It says actually: use flash as stopgap. What’s so great about this? I’m actually using HTML5 as fallback in my own media player, mainly to cover mobile devices and tablets. Doing the opposite is nonsense.

I wanted to create an audio spectrum for istance, I couldn’t because of the different browser specs.

By the end of the year things will change as ie will not include any updates on old version + ie10 and window 8 will not include flash as default.

If you want to talk about more critical issue in more large scale that is css3, but overall all this stuff with html5 will increases in time on the support.

The key today is mobile; once you take flash from the mobile equation and leave it only to Air /Flex which require more skills and develop cost, HTML 5 will already be mandatory.

But overall the web browser wills stay static on the visual matter and i don’t see that change until html5 will be a true standard. And hell even flash fall back as mandatory start to fade, many just don’t care about it .

flashedge say he actually using HTML5 as fallback for his main flash in his own media player but that because he is a flasher and have the skills doing so, as the majority using JW Player only cos` they cant handle flash as a front media first …..

I have two bad-news words for you: ‘mobile’ and ‘iPhone’.

I think it’s best to provide HTML5 video with a flash fallback. Or the other way around, as flashedge does (if you know FLASH ).

This isn’t kindergarden anymore, where we fought over who’s toys are cooler. We now ‘fight’ over clients. Clients who make us money by using whatever toys they like. :)

Apple, Microsoft and finally Adobe doesn’t cares about Flash. So it doesn’t matter how many benefits Flash has.

The landscape did a complete 180 yet the amount of overall traffic iPad/iPhone shows in that report is 4%.

Now when building a website for a small business, everyone in the decision room owns an iPad . And so it wasn’t really the technology that drove the shift. Instead it was just a few select people and this is quite amazing when you think about it. Because 4% is almost identical to the amount of users who browsed without Flash, and that number was never a problem before…
