I purchased one of the templates here and I am able to do everything but edit the text on the work flow. I click text I want to edit and it shows a gray blank screen. I have tried clicking the eye to shut it off and everything but nothing is working! I know it was developed in AE CS5 but I have cs 5.5. I don’t know if that matters but I would really like to finish this project! I would deeply appreciate any help that is sent my way! Thank you so much in advance.

Hey man, it is recommended to contact the author of the template. He should know what’s going on. If both of you cant figure it out maybe you can post a shot here so we can all take a look. Does not sound like a big issue. I doubt it if the software version can be blamed. Meanwhile, try downloading the package again. Hope this helped.

I have been in touch with the author all weeknd but what he is telling me is not working…He kinda gave up on me…I am new to AE and mnaybe its just that but I have researched this and tried several things but nothing is working. I am not sure how I can post a screen shot so let me explain…There are several layers that I can get in with no problem but when it comes to the text layer I can’t see anything on the screen for me to edit it. It just looks like a gray screen with nothing on it. I have tried click on everything and it will not work. So I am frustrated and want to just edit so I can move on with the project. I really do appreciate you trying to help me with this. It means a lot.

This may sound silly, but have you tried placing your timeline cursor once you open the text composition? Try scrolling to like 1 second for example…?

normally text layer is also pre-composed so i guess u need to check the composition with the name something like replace text or replace me or something to do with replace.

probably after you are clicking on elements in the composition preview window you end up in the “layer window”. Is one of those confusing things in AE. it will show up in the same place as the composition preview window but there will be a red bar under it.
Even if you see the text on the screen, some transparent layer could be on top of that text layer and when you click you end up in that layer window.
Open the project from scratch, unzip the arhive in a new folder and open the project from there.
reset the working space by going to Window -> Workspace -> Standard and then again Window -> Workspace -> Reset “Standard”
Click on compositions names in the timeline bottom area not on the big open preview area till you get inside the composition with the text you want to change.
Move the time indicator on the timeline till you see the text appear, if is animated, just make sure the text you want to change shows up on screen.
double click on the text layer name (it should have a T as a little icon) in the bottom timeline panel. do not click in the preview area.
change the text.

The most likely explanation from what you are saying is that you are trying to edit the text a point on the timeline where it doesn’t exist. (Pretty much what Andrenavarre is saying above). You need to make sure that your playback head is parked over the text layer in question at a point where the text is visible.
If you double-click a text layer to edit it while the playback head is before the text layer’s in point or after the text layer’s out point or at a point where the text has zero opacity or is invisible because it is matted, then you will see the text area edit highlight, but not the text itself – this sounds like it could be the grey box that you are describing. You can make sure that you are within the time bracket where a layer exists, by selecting the layer in question and pressing I on your keyboard. The playback head will jump to the in-point of the selected layer (and if this wasn’t visible on screen, then the timeline will scroll to center this point in time in the timeline view). To make sure that you are seeing the layer that you have selected on screen, try enabling and disabling it (clicking its eye icon on and off). If you see the expected disappearing / reappearing in the preview window, then you have the right layer. Also, if you hover your cursor over the preview window with the Selection Tool (arrow) selected and right-click at a point, you will see that the last entry in the contextual menu is Select and under this menu, you can select all layers that are have a visible pixel on screen under the point that you right-clicked at.
It sounds like user error. Are you familiar with how to edit a text layer in general? It might be worth setting up a little project with a text layer and just playing around with it for a couple of minutes to get used to how it works. Try doing the things I mentioned above. And try keyframing the Text layer’s Source Text property (twirl down the Text layer, then twirl down Text to find it) and watch what happens.
The key thing is to understand what AE is doing and what it is showing you on screen.
