Question: is it OK for a theme author to give his files away for free for a limited time (to possibly attract more visitors/buyers). Maybe under certain conditions (ie answer a few questions – like a feedback)?

Maybe, but then the “Free File of The Month” is not fair to people who paid for the file as well…
