I think one of the challenges with price increases has been that the highest valued products were also under-priced. So for example, when a WordPress theme was $35, it was hard to justify an HTML template being priced higher than $15. And then if an HTML template is $15, it’s hard to justify a jQuery plugin being priced higher than $8, etc. But WordPress pricing has changed so in theory that should give a little wiggle room for other pricing to get a fresh look.

Another important fact is Extended Licence price; it is too low in CC and 5x price can attract mostly
Not-So-Honest kind of buyers/implementations; again this is a problem only for authors. We have choice of either red pill or blue pill; no options for extended licence opt in-out for different marketplaces.

I’ve since turned extended licensing on now that cross-marketplace usage has been clarified. But it’s still tough swallowing a $20 extended license sale. It doesn’t make a lot of sense that WP themes are 50x when jQuery items are 5x. But I guess they crunched the numbers at some point and decided that extended licenses weren’t being sold when the percentages were higher.

But if generating additional revenue is the goal, it might be time to reevaluate multi-use licenses. CodeCanyon is one of the marketplaces where multi-use licenses make a lot of sense. Because once a user gets comfortable with a plugin, it’s fair to assume that they’d probably want to save some money if they plan to use the component more than once. We should think of multi-use licenses as a “point-of-sale add-on” opportunity, similar to how when you buy a theme, Envato recommends hosting next to the download button. Add-ons are a proven way to generate extra revenue. If they weren’t, I wouldn’t be asked if I want a large popcorn “for only $0.79 more” every time I order a small popcorn at the movies :D

That’s a decent idea, so the buyer will see an additional button on the downloads page which helps buying multi-license with discount. Atleast for now this may help A/B test before adding it on item page as full feature.

Completley agree that 5x multiplier for CC is unacceptable, at least for usage in themes and content management systems. Many plugins on CodeCanyon can “make” a whole theme, and paying for it $50-$100 when one theme license costs $40-$60 is way too low.

For usage in stuff like mobile apps – 5x multiplier is a normal price. So I think it should be separated somehow.

I’m considering releasing a theme on Themeforest, but part of it would make a great plugin. But at 5x, the extended license is too cheap. That’s only $40 to $125 for most plugins. Another author can include that feature and take sales from my theme. If I do release it on its own, I’ll opt out of extended licenses.

^ Yes allowed and that’s the way Extended License works. That’s ok and since it is cross-marketplace usage, there is no harm for most sub-categories.
