can I use external file and give a link to download

Hi guys.

Above the download link there’s a note: “If you use this image, please give credit to Vectorportal.com with URL . Download in vector format at”

So I wonder, is it OK if I use this vector file in preview image and tutorial (tutorial will show how to achieve the look of original project that I will supply for download using this particular vector file). However, I would not include this vector file in the the assets folder – I’d just supply a link to it. Is it OK? Or is it bad?

What is the policy about this? Can someone elaborate on that? Thanks.

Yes you can as long as you don’t include it in your download file.

Include it in your preview and tutorial, but don’t include it in your project download. As you mentioned above, provide a link so that the purchaser can also download.

Also, don’t base your project too heavily on third-party media like the vector file. Try to make it so that the vector art is replaceable with something else… otherwise there’s the danger that the vector file you link to may no longer be available in six month’s time.

I try limit my third-party media usage to placeholder images where possible and create everything else myself.

Incidentally, Miseld suggests above that the licence allows you to include it in your project. I don’t think that is the case. You are on very dubious ground selling someone else’s work that they themselves are giving away for free. Be rather wary of creative commons licences in general: Sometimes the rights that the author of the work gives away are not actually the author’s to give away!
