Since we’re on the topic of authors, check out my new username. LOL .
It’s difficult to critique a file without actually using it. Instead I think we should brainstorm how to get more buyers to rate.
I think eBay has the best rating system. After purchasing an item, there will be a new link in the buyers dashboard which will say I need to leave feedback for 1 item – Then obviously you will want to rate so you can get rid of the link off your dashboard. Pretty cool. It works.

A possible downside of this would be that people would randomly rate files, simply to get rid of that link. It sure is a tough problem, making the hasty buyers rate our items! :(

I do agree that something needs to be done about this, though!

The dashoboard idea is cool, maybe buyers should give a reason why they give the file less then 5 stars? that way then they rate 5 stars its quick and when they want to rate less they gave to give a reason and that explanation could displayed in the comment section..

Why should there just be a comment section for a less than 5 star rating?

Ebay has buyer comments for everyone. OK, they often make pretty tedious reading, but you often read them anyway to reassure yourself before you enter into a binding deal of trust with a stranger.

if you do read one that says ‘this seller is an idiot, he was rude and awful’, it’s very different if you read it in the context of 100 other comments that say ‘what a thoroughly nice, efficient, helpful person’.

In VH item discussions, there are a disproportionately high number of negative comments left. I guess buyers are driven to comment if their experience is not as smooth as they had imagined.

‘This does not work – I want my money back’ is off-putting for other buyers, damaging to an item’s long term sales and 9 times out of 10 comes down to the fact that the buyer hasn’t used the software before / didn’t read the description or user guide / has a cracked or demo copy of the software.

+1 for buyer comments… but they should be encouraged for all star ratings.

Well… When a star rating is given, buyers give an explanation. The explanation is given in the comments field, wherever. It doesn’t even have to be public. Under the comment, there’s a little plus and a little minus. Plus stands for a quality review, minus stands for a useless review. Everybody can rate, or only the author (when only shown to the author). The buyer who left a review can build up a reputation, it can even be shown as an icon. The more useful reviews, the better their icon, just like we have now for earnings. There can even be a reward at 10/50/100 useful reviews (reward in any form). This way buyers will be stimulated to rate and review.

It sounds rather complicated, but it’s not, really. The useful and useless review is in effect on a site called newgrounds, check it out if you like.

My two cents. :)

There was a thread in which an author was thinking about giving points for every deposit (50 points = 1usd or something). Why not something like that for those who rate? Of course, the points would be symbolic, so a buyer won’t get 50 bucks because he rated a file. But that could ambition them to raise more points and spend them on flashden. What do you guys think?

I guess the challenge is creating an incentive where buyers don’t rate blindly. I wonder if a reminder in the homepage dashboard would be nice. Seems more relevant than when you last logged in.
