hi – quick question, is it easy to drop in an alpha png text file in place of text (or right under the layer) in ae, for most projects?

i’m asking, because I like to use photoshop glossy cool looking png text files, and it would be nice if it was easy to use those (resize/fit to width/transform to __px, whatever) instead of the flat fonts, in ae

i know it’s kind of a one size fits all question and the answer is probably ‘it depends’.... but in general is it easy to swap out png (w/alpha) text files instead of using built-in text in the aeps here? (kind of like using a logo png file instead of text, same idea)

thanks…

If the text layer is in an external composition, so not in the main comp, it is easy. Just drop it in the comp. But if it is in the main comp, it is not so easy.

You can Ken,...but, maybe easier thing is to create some style (glossy, fancy, modern) in Photoshop, and import it in AE as editable Photoshop file. After that simply copy photoshop styles and paste them on After effects text.

Actually he was going to save file from PS as .png (non editable image file). My advice is not to create text style in AE,.......actually i was thinking to create Photosop file add some style on some object (text, box, anything), after that import that file in After Effects, and simply copy-paste text styles.

Normally you can simply replace one layer’s source with another source….i.e. your png. But unfortunately, a text or a shape layer in AE has no source. If this layer is animated, then it’s tricky as AE can’t natively precompose a text layer (while leaving all its attributes in the main comp) which is what you need to do.

So you need to use this script:

http://aescripts.com/smart-precomposer/

to precompose (and leave) the text layer, then you can swap out the source, by highlighting the precomposed layer, selecting the new png source in the project and alt-dragging it over the layer.

Alternatively, you could drop your png in the comp, parent it to the text layer, make it 3D, set it’s scale to 100, rotation and orienation to 0,0,0 0,0,0 and it’s position to the text layer’s anchorpoint. Then turn the text layer’s visibility off.

if you want that png text in place of a text, put the png in the comp, make the png “3D” layer, then select and copy the “transform” from the text and paste it to the png. after that, drag the “parent” from the text to png layer at the timeline, make the text invisible and then put the png at the right place…
